A Clear Disconnect

Professional qualifications, business and political success can cause even the most, well intension individuals to disconnect from the majority in society. This happens slowly and quietly as one’s world condenses into caste. One’s standard of living can make one the envy and hence target of others. One’s skills and abilities can present one as being financially secure attracting both the salesperson and the criminal. One’s success may earn one the status of role model, always speak very sensitively.


Interaction with the common individual, junior staff members and average customers suffer as your communication becomes more and more insensitive. From the first day on the job, having been always surrounded by and drawn to persons with similar educational paths, one is already programmed to ignore the virtually invisible security personnel and the wallflower receptionist as necessary but having nothing positive to add to the plan. As time goes on and promotions lead to the top, interpersonal relationships become limited to directors and executives, large scale customers and suppliers, constituency representatives and of course, elite clubs.

So, understanding and accepting that you (in a position of power and influence) and yours are the targets of persons wishing to advance is crucial. One spends an enormous amount of time identifying, studying and researching the competition, whiles the threats are from ambitious, eager to please individuals that make it their job to study you. The solution cannot be mixed, asks any successful politician or public relations practitioner, executives cannot associate with people who have bread and butter issues or cannot understand the joke, those who try will embarrass themselves most of the time and obviously, the organization they represent.

In the executive suite, one can tactfully persuade, but amount average people, do not attempt to negotiate with a gunman. With humble beginnings amount poor people, many executives still think they have the common touch. But rather than build their dream home, they moved out of their home town into more secure gated communities, surrounding themselves with persons at the same income level, so that they could sleep comfortably, because they know the mindset of the people in their home town. Like the security guard and receptionist, the home town people you grew up around have nothing positive to add to the plan, they want something for nothing.

Executives, busy making money and reinvesting to build empires, often think that they have all the answers. Speaking at the bar in an elite pub to a female executive, one is overheard by the female bartender calling a girl with five children for five different fathers stupid. No, the bartender did not have any children, but she is going to speak about your insensitive attitude to others. These others maybe employees, directors or media reporters, hence the same preparation taken for staff and board meetings and especially, news conferences must be taken for socializing.
