Recession Business

During this global recession some business sectors will continue to be profitable. Agriculture, Processing and Packaging, Transportation and Maintenance are all reliant on Energy and Security.

Agriculture, both animal (including fish) raring and plant cultivation of any basic food items at any scale or size of farm, can offer the much sort after food security. From massive farms to home gardens, utilizing all available space, state-of-the-art technologies and practices, to grow food, is an opportunity for everyone to benefit. Mixed farming and multi-storey green houses are the latest techniques for all year round profit generation. Green house construction and farming support services, such as agricultural consultancy and education, animal feed supply and plant nutritional supply, are further profit generation opportunities.

Processing and Packaging of items or services will provide a value added component to any type of business operation. This may create thoughts of large factory operations, treating or combining goods and canning or wrapping to make a finish product. In fact, this can also refer to many home-based business, such as sewing alterations, personal hair and body care, home office support services, graphic artist services, home kitchen cooking or baking, teaching and coaching, etc. Any item or service can be changed, augmented or improved upon to suit the customer or to produce a new more unique product that can fetch a higher price and generate more profits.

Transportation, of essential goods and movement of productive people, is a cornerstone of economic activity. Delivering goods to downstream processing centers, to market and to the end-user or consumer is the business of distribution. Cargo business presents many opportunities; custom brokerage, shipping line local representative, vessel (air, sea or land) owner/operator, to name a few. Getting people to and from production centers at minimum cost requires well thought-out mass transit network solutions. These large scale solutions always depend on and offer opportunities for smaller scale passenger vehicle owners to make a profit.

Maintenance of infrastructure, buildings, vehicles and other commonly used equipment will save costs and extend productive life. So, business with the relevant skills and capacity to provide such services will always do well. Business such as waste management, janitorial services, plumbers, auto-mechanics, electricians, computer technician, electronic and air-condition repairs, etc. all require some level and type of engineering training and business support services.

Energy is clearly necessary in all these sectors. In agriculture energy fuels are needed to pump water and run specialized equipment, in processing and packaging electricity is a common input, in transportation fuels are normally the highest expense, and in maintenance both electricity and fuels play a key role. Security, as well, is clearly necessary as the gap between the “haves” and the “haves not” widens. Hence, both energy and security are where the best opportunities lay.
