Success from Failure

The failure of the education system to present and promote business (not to be confused with management studies) as a career option has led to a society of employees. This failure must stop, the system must not allow dropouts, for any reason, access to education is a basic human right, no discouragement from testing but an assessment formula that addresses, without shame, the individual’s learning speed and aptitude. Success of any education system, from early childhood to adult instructions, is to promote a love of learning, foster a curiosity and desire to research, analyze, implement and evaluate.

The wider society awards sporting heroes and beauty queens, while career teachers, nurses and technicians in general are seen as average or worst, one step away from failure. Failure due to a lack of career enhancement opportunities and recognition of their talents, because many cannot pay their bills and live pay-slip to pay-slip but, of the utmost importance is the lack of self-confidence, because of the “you are only…” instead of “you can be…” attitude. Success is to build and maintain a society that appreciates and rewards a dedicated work force, a skilled and further trainable service sector and progressive thinkers.

Spouse, parents and guardians, taking their cue from the wider society, guide their love ones into professional fields like medicine and law and perceive anything else as failure. Failure is born from a lack of encouragement and career options, having an unfulfilled desire to accomplish something and a general sense of despair and hopelessness, fuelled by having to do a job that you do not want to do and the pay is not enough to meet your basic living expenses. Success is about being the best you can be, taking full advantage of all opportunities and creating happiness.

The belief that the person that is there the longest is the best person to lead has been proven wrong on many occasions. Promoting a person simply because there are near to retirement to boost their pension benefits, in front of the more skilled choice, is just wrong. Failure is a square peg in a round hole, an untrained business person running a business, or a manager not open to change. Being passed over for a promotion, no matter the reason, for someone who has not trained and clearly less capable, only adds to further feelings of failure. Success comes from learning about all aspects of business, researching case studies, getting the opportunity to practice, implementing management techniques and measuring the results.

Success in business is measured by opening new markets, introducing new products, movement of sales, improving production efficiency, monitoring expenses, increasing year-over-year earnings, growth in share values and enhancing the quality of life. When did success become about acquiring things, the best cars, the biggest house, newest fashion and simply the most. Success is about achievement not possessions.
